Our Managing Partner participated in New Year's Eve festivities hosted by the Thai-Lao Business Council.

Our managing partner, Somphob Rodboon, visited the abbot of Wat Sisaket in Vientiane, Laos, on January 13, 2023, along with members and the committee of the Thai-Lao Business Council. Additionally, the group of members traveled to welcome the new year and met with the ambassador of the Thai Embassy in Vientiane, Laos, the minister of industry and the minister of energy, and mine. The members of the Thai-Lao Business Council then attended an internal meeting to discuss work plans for the year 2023 at Krung Thai Bank, Vientiane Capital, before attending the council-arranged New Year's party.


Myanmar Intellectual Department Expected New Trademark Law to Come into Force in March 2023

On January 12, 2023, the Myanmar Intellectual Property Department issued an announcement stating that the Trademark Law 2019, is planned to come into force in March 2023.

The Myanmar Intellectual Property Department will formally accept the trademark registration system once the Trademark Law is put into     effect. Before the Myanmar Intellectual Property Department issues the   official announcement that will come into force, mark owners must gather the necessary information to obtain trademark protection in Myanmar.

However, the registered marks/used marks are still accepting during the soft opening period according to Notification No. 63/2020.

The procedure for accepting payment will be announced from the Department with the specific notification.

The person who received the WIPO FILE User Account will be allowed to act as a representative for trademark registration after completion of the Trademark Registration training course conducted by the Myanmar         Intellectual Property Department.

Therefore, the person who received the WIPO File User Account holders and who wish to register as the trademark registration representative are required to attend the Trademark Registration Representative Training Course held in Intellectual Property Department.

World IP Forum

On 9th November 2022, attorney Vicheka Lay, ILAWASIA Cambodia partner, attended the Comprehensive Asia Development Plan 3.0 (CADP 3.0) Symposium: Towards and Integrated, Innovative, Inclusive, and Sustainable Economy, co-organized by the Cambodia Ministry of Commerce and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

This symposium shared an understanding of CADP 3.0 as a framework for future development with government officials, the private sector and academics.

ASEAN Business and Investment Summit 2022 in Phnom Penh.

On 9th and 10th November 2022, attorney Vicheka Lay, ILAWASIA Cambodia partner, attended the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit 2022 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The event was held on the sideline as Cambodia is an ASEAN chair and ASEAN Business Advisory Council 2022. Attorney Vicheka Lay met with various members and leaders of Cambodia Chamber of Commerce, participants from other ASEAN countries, trade policy makers and other relevant stakeholders from various countries in the region and beyond that attended this even

Vicheka Lay attended seminar organized by the International Law Society of Cambodia

On 22nd October 2022, attorney Vicheka Lay, ILAWASIA’s Cambodia partner, coordinated an international law seminar, organized by the International Law Society of Cambodia.
 
Speakers in the event include vice prosecutor from Kampong Speu court of first instance, Mr. Chak Sambath, who spoke about the precedence of the Extraordinary Chamber in the Court of Cambodia; Mr. Mao Kimpao, officer from arbitration council, who spoke about an arbitral award regarding the Cambodia-India cooperation project; and Mr. Kong Sovannraingsey, who spoke about island territorial dispute between Indonesia and Malaysia.
 
Attorney Lay touched bases on a number of growing significance of international laws in the Cambodian context, due to various international legal instruments that Cambodia entered into, including the Cambodia-China Free Trade Agreement, Cambodia-Korea Free Trade Agreement, Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement and others.
